Review of Rock Hard by Nalini Singh

Rock Hard is the second book in Nalini Singh's Rock Kiss series. It's about a battle of wills and personality between mousy (and closet tiger) office assistant Charlotte Baird and former rugby player turned CEO Gabriel Bishop. Charlotte is painfully shy and still emotionally scarred when Gabriel Bishop arrives at her company and puts everyone on their toes as he tries to turn the company around. Something about him, though brings out Charlotte's hidden attitude as well has hidden lust. Right from the beginning, Gabriel is completely taken by Charlotte. Her brains and hidden claws are absolutely irresistible to him. The question is how to get her to come around enough to feel the same about him.
While I didn't read the first book in this series, I am a fan of the author's psy-changling series so I was excited and curious as to how she would be with contemporary.
This book moved at a nice steady pace. Once I started it, I didn't really stop until I finished it. I thought the story was well done. While there weren't any big surprises in the story, there were a lot of extra baggage plots thrown in there just for the sake of making a bigger book. I absolutely loved Gabriel. He's the total alpha male, yet brains in a woman is his weakness. I felt everything he did, slowly and patiently, to get Charlotte to get over her fears and trust in him made him beautiful. Charlotte, on the other hand, kind of had to grow on me. I didn't like the mousy Charlotte. I understood her reasons for why she was the way she was, it just didn't work for me. However, once she started coming out of her shell because of Gabriel, she definitely did a 360, fighting to overcome her demons for him and was a character I really liked.
