Review of Edgar Allan Poe The Dover Reader by Edgar Allan Poe

Image
"Nevermore, Nevermore" Need I say more? For anyone even remotely into the macabre, they must be a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, the author that invented the entire genre. This is a collection of his greatest stories and poems and is a must have for any fan as well as anyone that loves horror or creepy tales.

Review of The Death of Caesar by Barry Strauss

Image
This book is the true story of the great Roman General Julius Caesar and the day he died. It goes into detail the different people that were his rivals, his betrayals, as well as his allies. It culminates everything that builds up to that one act of betrayal. The author did an excellent job recreating the complete background and character buildup for an event that affected two different nations. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes true history and/or is a fan of one the biggest figures in history.

Review of Rebellion of a Chalet Girl by Lorraine Wilson

Image
Tash is 23 and works at the Chalet Repos. She's been tuning out lately, getting drunk as often as possible. Scott and Holly are almost like family to Tash and she's insecure with Holly's baby on the way. Nathaniel Campbell is with the Lion Den, an organization where anyone under 25 with a business plan can apply for grants to better their lives. Rebecca has taken Sofie's replacement. Her dad is a judge. She really doesn't need to work. Tash and Rebecca really don't get along because of Tash. Tash is instantly attracted to Nate and he's not at all like she thought he'd be. Tash had been to 14 foster homes. She used to cut herself and Nate noticed. I found that Tash has cut herself off from the world so nobody can hurt her. Few people are allowed to know her well enough to touch her life. She feels that nobody truly wants her. She's insecure and yet she's much stronger than she knows, a survivor. As her story goes on, you have to root for her. Nat

Review of Jaded by Verina Denman

Ruth is a 20yr old that has two jobs: part time at the United Grocery Store and full-time attendance clerk at the high school. Her cousin was John-Scott. He's the head coach of the high school football team. Grady's the new kid, a senior from Fort Worth. Ruth seemed to be the town's matchmaking project and the United Grocery served as the town gossip. Grady's older brother, Dodd, made a three-year commitment to preach part-time at the Trapp Congregation Church. Ruth and her mom had been kicked out of the church whereas John-Scott told Ruth that the Cunninghams and the Church of God were important to him. Dodd couldn't believe that Linda, Ruth's mother, had been kicked out of the church. After Ruth's interactions with the Cunninghams, she was confused about them and God. Ruth was a good girl, hard working, but filled with bitterness and hurt from how she was treated by the people of the church and her mom. She also loves her mom and cares for her. Dodd was a

Review of Paranormal Keepers by Jen Naumann

Harper's boyfriend Gavin had been killed the year before. Everyone blamed Harper, but there was no proof. Shortly after that, strange things that Harper couldn't explain, happened on a daily basis. Human-shaped shadows moving around her, dark figures lurking outside her bedroom window, strange noises in the middle of the night. Vhunter is an online friend that Harper talks to a lot. At a homicide scene, Harper meets Lexie, then wakes up on a stone slab. Lexie tells her that she's at Guardane Academy. There was an agreement between humans and unearthly creatures. Keepers clean up after creature attacks and do whatever it takes to ensure the agreement. At the academy, keepers learn how to deal with the creatures and how to keep the secret safe. Vhunter's real name is Dexter. He's a keeper at the academy. Harper is a strong girl, but has been lost since the murder of her boyfriend. I found her to be loyal and caring, but has a low opinion of herself. She feels like sh

Leah had returned to Singapore a month ago. Toran had been emailing Leah but had been keeping things light as she asked him not to rush her. She hadn't heard from him in a couple of days but then got a call that she had a visitor. It wasn't Toran, but Ah Song. Leah moved back to Singapore, Julia picked her up from the airport. She decided to go to Toran's home, but when she got there Angela, Toran's ex-fiance, opened the door and invited Leah in. Julia had lied both to Toran and Leah when she left Singapore. She had told Toran that Lean hadn't sent any emails and she had told Leah the same thing about Toran. Leah is more stubborn in this book, but she hasn't really learned to trust Toran.  She shows to be tenacious, loyal and loving. She has grown in  a good way. I loved both the first and second book in this series. I"m looking forward to the third. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good mystery/romance.

Review of Tender Deceit by H.Y. Hanna

Leah had a father who had just been hit by a car and died in Singapore, so she had to go sort his stuff, arrange his funeral and see his lawyer. She had a flatmate named Aimee. Toran James was Leah's first lover and heartbreak. When her dad found out about them, he whisked her away to boarding school in the UK. She was 14 at the time. 12 years later, Aimee had sent Toran a friend request. When Leah went to shut her laptop down, she saw he had accepted and wanted to have a drink with her the next night. She had already re-connected with her best friend in Singapore, Julia. Shen called Julia after meeting with Toran, talked to her about meeting with him, but Julia told her it wasn't possible because he had been killed the day before from an explosion. Leah was a caring woman, but she was also scared of being hurt again. Toran was a true man: Brave, Loyal, Strong and Smart. He also refused to let go of something once he decided to do it. I truly loved this mystery/

Review of Tender Betrayal by H.Y. Hanna

Leah moved in with Toran one week ago, yet was hiding a secret from him. Even though she craved trust she didn't deserve it. Black Buddha was a kingpin of the Singapore underworld. Toran noticed that Leah had been acting strange the last few weeks. It had been five years since Toran's parents' death. Toran didn't believe his parents' death was an accident. Toran found out Leah's secret and said he needed some time apart. This was an excellent serial. Book 3 was great. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Review of Strange Magic Pt 1 by Michelle Mankin

Thyme owns an ice cream shop called Chantelle Glace. She has a grandmother that's 62 and a boyfriend named Shane that she's known since she was a kindergartner. Leon Johnson owns The Hotspot, a bar, and wants to buy Thyme's shop because of it's location. When Thyme was heading to her shop, Leon came upon her, held her hand for a moment, and said he wouldn't try to buy her place anymore, that he wanted to be friends. Thyme had a criss-cross pattern on the inside of her wrist. To celebrate Thyme's engagement to Shane, they go to The Hotspot with another couple. Leon wanted to give them a tour of his establishment. Upon meeting his manager, Thyme thought she looked just like Marie Laveau. After they meet her, they both pass out. I found Thyme to really care about the people in her life. She's very cautious and yet she's a very curious person. She doesn't know anything about her family as her mother abandoned her. I found this book to be very good read

Review of Dark Desire: Dark Series 2 by Lauren Dawes

Image
Dark Desire takes place several weeks after Dark Deceit ends. If you haven't read the first one, then read it before this one. They should definitely be read in order. In this book, we follow Taer and Eir as they both struggle to deal with life after their siblings' deaths. Taer is in a place where all she can think about is revenge, barely surviving otherwise. Eir is doing a bit better but still seriously grieving. They each run into someone that helps them on paths. Taer is on a road that she feels will only end with the death of the one that killed her brother and destroyed her life. She's not happy with the pace that Korvain is training her, even though he has her best interests in mind. She's determined and driven by a drive won't end until she succeeds. Eir is a bit better than Taer in that she's at least dealing and not drowning in a need for vengeance. When she meetings the head of security from the club, they form a bond that helps both of them to heal

Cacy was a ferry. The veil is a window to the afterlife. Cacy's father, Patrick Ferry, took her into the veil and told her it was time for her to understand the family business. Eli and Galena Margolis are siblings. They were refugees from the West. They have an apartment waiting for them because of Galena. She has a high importance because of her research. Eli was starting a new job at the EMS station. Declan Ferry was the chief there. Patrick Ferry was the CEO of Psychopomps and had announced his retirement. Rylan, Dec and Cacy's brother, was the new CEO. Cacy was a paramedic and Eli's new partner. Galena had a faculty position in the Harvard University in the immunology department. Eli's work was his haven. Cacy and Eli went on an emergency call where Cacy's father and employees had been attacked. Eli tried but couldn't save Cacy's dad. The other paramedics blamed Eli for not doing enough. Cacy was not the princess she could've been. Instead she kept

Review of Wrongful Death by L.J. Sellers

Police officer Dan Thompson handed out all the worn things the community donated to the homeless people. He'd been doing this for 7 years. He was found murdered near the homeless camp. Claire Devonshire's daughter Ashley was being blackmailed for $15,000 to destroy an incriminating video. Claire's husband had leukemia, so they couldn't come up with the money for the blackmailer. Ashley killed herself after the video was released. The same thing happened to another girl named Myra. Claire's blackmail occurred in November and Myra's in May. The blackmailer told Myra's parents they wanted $10,000 and they paid. Schak was another officer. He was Dan's cousin but more like a brother. His boss wouldn't let him work Dan's case. Instead, he was given a rape case where the victim killed herself (Claire). Schak had a drinking problem but he was still a really good cop and being very thorough with his cases. He also was having marriageable problems because

Desiree is a DJ who works for KICK radio. She's been there 7 years working evenings and nights, but she's finally made it to prime time days. Desiree did a trivia question and Kyle Harrison won the prize. He showed up at the studio right near Desiree. He owned Harrison Industries. He invited Desiree to share his prize, which was a meal for two. Kyle lived in Seattle. Kyle was very determined to have time with Desiree and she was just as determined to keep him away from her heart. Desiree felt she had put in her dues to get where she was at. She knew she was afraid to offer any kind of commitment. I enjoyed the book. I liked the ins and outs and was happy the way the book came together. I would recommend it to anyone who likes romances with a kick.

Review of See Her Run by A.K. Leigh

Image
Diana is in a witness protection program because of her ex-husband. Diana's ordeal started 7 years earlier. She had a scar the entire length of her left cheek. Chris was a cop that worked with the witness protection program for 15 years. Chris was driving Diana to a safe house. He was staying 30 minutes east from her. Diana was staying at Pam's apartment. Before going into the apartment, Diana noticed a garden that signified freedom to her. Pam's foster son was Jonathan Smith. Jonathan was also a witness but he was unprotected. Diana recognized him. He was the man that helped her escape her abusive marriage. Richard Ruso was Diana's ex-husband who needed people to see the power he wielded. When things start happening, she might have been found... This story was very well written. It kept you enthralled. I stayed up all night to finish it. I just couldn't put it down! I absolutely loved it. I recommend it to anyone that likes a good mystery.

Review of Death Falls by Todd Ritter

Image
Maggie and Ken had a son named Charlie who came up missing. Ruth Clark was a 60yr old neighbor and had seen Charlie's bike go over the falls. Charlie was 9 and was moon crazy. He cheered, jumped and cried when the Apollo 11 touched down on the moon's surface. Nick had saved Kat's life from the grim reaper. He worked with Sarah Donnally Foundation, named after Nick's murdered sister. Newspapers referred to Nick as a cold case philanthropist. Nick's mission was to find unsolved cases and solve them. Eric Olmstead hired Nick to find out what happened to his older brother Charlie. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It had a lot of twists and turns. I was very surprised at some of them. Was very happy with the way the book ended.

Review of Beverly Hills Demon Slayer by Angie Fox

Image
Lizzy's new husband, Dmitri, is a shape-shifting griffon. Pirate, her dog, has been able to speak to her since she came into her powers. Pirate had also adopted a dragon named Flappy the year before. Lizzy's biker witch grandma has been teaching her how to brew protection spells, but Lizzy sucked at being a witch. The Arrow of Hell tried to kill Lizzy at her wedding. Shiloh McBride was half-human and half-succubus, previously spared by Lizzy, who came to Lizzy's to help her out. Altogether they are trying to uncover an ancient cult that has appeared in Beverly Hills. I thought the book was really good. I really enjoyed the confrontation between Lizzy and the Arrow of Hell. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes paranormal/urban fantasy books.

Review of Chasing Claire by Paula Marinaro

Image
Claire was helping out at Ruby Red's, which was owned by Hells Saints Motorcycle Club, which was founded and ran by surrogate father Prosper. Claire's best friend and roommate is Glory, who is an old nude dancer turned fisherman. Reno is Claire's ex and it still hurt to think about him. Raine is Claire's sister, Diego is her husband, and Willow is her daughter. Claire had done drugs but was now clean. Reno decided he wanted Claire back. Claire loved Reno but was determined to stay away from him. Claire is a strong woman, despite the trials she went through in her childhood. She is still haunted by things she's had to do to protect herself, her sister and her niece. She is protective of those she loves but still manages to have an attitude. Reno is a strong, determined man. Once he decides he wants something, he sticks to it and doesn't let anything come in the way of it. He can be very caring. I enjoyed reading this book immensely with the ups and downs. I w

Review of Alphas Gone Wild Anthology by Michelle Fox, Catherine Vale, Tabitha Connall et al

Image
While lately I've been reading more anthologies to discover new authors, the reason I don't usually get into them is because they aren't usually full stories or the author crams so much into so few pages that I can't make heads nor tails of it. This anthology is a mix of complete short stories and parts of full stories, but was still well worth the read. All of the stories have a high heat index. Touch of Alpha by Catherine Vale This was actually a full story. Denver has the opportunity to become alpha. Rather than take the free pass that would give him alpha status, he follows his heart. While it was short, the author was able to put in enough for you to get a good feel for the lead male and female. I'll definitely be looking for more to read from this author. 4 stars Pack Justice by Michelle Fox While this was more a piece to a whole story, it was very hawt and very well written. You get a full feel for all three characters and are left wanting to read more on th

Review of Rock Hard by Nalini Singh

Image
Rock Hard is the second book in Nalini Singh's Rock Kiss series. It's about a battle of wills and personality between mousy (and closet tiger) office assistant Charlotte Baird and former rugby player turned CEO Gabriel Bishop. Charlotte is painfully shy and still emotionally scarred when Gabriel Bishop arrives at her company and puts everyone on their toes as he tries to turn the company around. Something about him, though brings out Charlotte's hidden attitude as well has hidden lust. Right from the beginning, Gabriel is completely taken by Charlotte. Her brains and hidden claws are absolutely irresistible to him. The question is how to get her to come around enough to feel the same about him. While I didn't read the first book in this series, I am a fan of the author's psy-changling series so I was excited and curious as to how she would be with contemporary. This book moved at a nice steady pace. Once I started it, I didn't really stop until I finished it.

Review of Guarding His Heart by Annie Seaton

Liam Wyndham is an author who wanted solitude to get over his shock and pain over his wife's death and to finish his latest book. Vanessa and Liam were separated but still married when she died. Georgie's relationship had just ended, with ex using the standard "It's not you, it's me" excuse. Everyone saw Georgie as a good sport, happy, easy going, and a practical joker. Just before her mother's death, Georgie found out the girl she though was her sister for 21 years was actually her cousin. To sort out her life and to change it, Georgie is going on a tour around the world. First she has to do one last job as a favor. Georgie saw a man laying on the beach and went to help him. He got very rude with her. The next day, when she goes to start the job, turns out the same guy, Liam, actually owns the house. Georgie's new mantra is "I value my independence". Liam's attitude helped her to keep this at the front of her mind. Even though she doesn

Review of Dances With Wolf by Farrah Taylor

Abby Macready was better at horse talk than talking to people, especially men. Three days ago, Jesse Olsen called her about his new mare. Bridget, Jesse's oldest daughter, was Abby's oldest friend. Jess and his wife Karen, were equally close to Abby's parents. Abby wanted to stay clear of Wolf, the Olsen's son, as he had already hurt her when she was younger. Bridget still held a grudge against Wolf for hurting her best friend. At one time he had been her playmate, her friend, her idle.  While she's checking out the new mare in the barn, she runs into him again. Abby is very sensitive to animals and absolutely loves them. She's very loyal, but can't seem to fight her attraction to Wolf. Wolf is a very determined young man. He tries to act rough and tough but really has a good heart. He's a true cowboy and really loves his family even though he's not home very often. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anybody that enjoys a little cowboy ro

David Sutter has been hiding in an Amish community under the name of Caine Yoder for the past 20 years. Tragedy, revenge and time have made it time for him to come out of hiding and finish everything that caused such a horrible childhood. Sybil Chalmers is the only calm in his rage-filled soul. She has been devoted to him for the past 10 years, but as things get darker he must keep her away or put her into danger. Right from the beginning, this book starts out dark and gets darker as it goes. We are introduced to David's raged and pained soul at the funeral of his Amish "father". We also see a balm to his soul as Sybil shows up to be there with him. I found David to be in such personal torment over his past that he's blind to any positive emotions he feels towards a very select few. While he acknowledges that he cares to an extent, he refuses to put a name to it as he feels he's too damaged to feel anything good. It makes you want to just cry for him. Sybil is a

Review of Sins of a Duke by Stacy Reid

Image
Lady Constance has become blacklisted in society for a sin that she can't do anything about. The Duke of Mondvale has such a scandalous reputation that hers looks like a minor indiscretion. When she sees him at a party one night, she can't help but be drawn to him. At a chance meeting later that night, she finally feels freedom from condemnation. The Duke is finding her a refreshing delight to his typically jaded and revenge-filled life. When he finds out that she's last chess piece he needs for the ultimate revenge, it was killing two birds with one stone. While the overall plot is fairly typical, especially in historical romances, the book itself wasn't. Once I started reading it, I didn't stop until I was done. The Duke's entire life and drive was driven by a justifiable revenge that made you want to hold him. Letting in Constance, even if by ulterior motives, allowed him to feel something more that hate and pain and had you cheering for him. Throughout the

Mia Brandt is a former military pilot who, because of PTSD, is now a civilian and is on a four-day bachelorette cruise with her cousin. While on a stopover on an island, in order to try to be "normal" she's encouraged to go hit on a hot guy the rest of the bridal party spots. When an unforeseen incident causes Mia miss the ship, she is forced to take Tag up on his offer to help her out. Neither Mia nor Tag are the type to form relationships, but when the explosive heat that had them hooking up the first time proves to still be there, they might just be slowly changing their minds. I really loved this book. I don't read too many contemporary or military books but when I started this book, I found it hard to put it down. I felt that Mia was written in an accurate portraya

Review of Finn by M. Malone

Image
Finn is a young war veteran who has a pill addiction that stems from a war injury. In the first book of this series, Finn and his brother finally accepted millions of dollars from their absentee father in order to pay for their mother to get top treatment for cancer. This book finds Finn using part of the money to seek vengeance against Marissa for breaking his heart when he was still in the military. Unbeknownst to him, Marissa's life hasn't been roses and she really regrets what she did. Old feelings resurface as the pain fades away but unfortunately for Finn, his vengeance plan does work. Overall, this book is very well written and does give a complete story. I really felt for what Finn had went through as a soldier and what he was doing for other displaced soldiers. Marissa's character was alright but I just really didn't find much there. I really liked the first book in the series about Finn's brother Gunn, but something just seemed missing for me. I don'

Siobhan Law is a principle violinist for the symphony orchestra of the University of Ireland. There hasn't been a challenge for the last two seasons. James Corrigan is the conductor and is talking to Liam Argyros. Liam is from Athens, Greece and wants to challenge Siobhan. The Olympians are we of the most powerful Greek Gods. Siobhan's family is one of the families that have been put on the earth to do the Gods' bidding. Liam is one of them. Liam won the challenge, crushing Siobhan's spirit, but because of her family's ties to the Gods, Siobhan knows there is something much more to Liam. She just didn't expect him to be one of the major Gods, Apollo. I found Liam to have a very powerful personality in the way he handles different situations. He's very determined and doesn't give up. He's also very handsome and compelling. The music that he plays is like a touch of heaven and is overpowering. Siobhan is very geared to and lives for her music. She tak

Review of Dark Debt (Chicagoland Vampires #11) by Chloe Neill

Image
Dark Debt takes us into Ethan Sullivan's worst nightmare and Merit is dragged through it with him. His maker appears to be back from the dead and Morgan Greer, Master of the House of Navarre, is being blackmailed and the only ones that can help him are the vampires at the House of Cadogan. As with the other Chicagoland Vampire books, this was a great adventure. During the course of the book I was able to figure out a bit of it, but the ending was definitely not expected. It was great seeing Morgan in the book again as well as see some vulnerability in her father.
