Review of In The Defendant's Chair by Lynn Yvonne Moon

Image
The book is comprised of several stories all intertwined with each other. Early is a mother of 3 who very much loves her husband. She remembers checking on her kids to make sure they are asleep and falling asleep next to her husband. She slowly comes to in a courtroom being charged with killing her husband and children. Her lawyer firmly believes in her innocence. For several months she didn't speak or react to anything. You learn about a set of twins raised by their aunt, who is an active retired agent of the agency (FBI) and uncle. Skyler is a current agent and Tyler took the scientific road and is a researcher. Skyler and her soon-to-be boyfriend are called to a location where strange DNA is found. What they find frightens them so she calls her aunt and uncle, who come out to help them. In the end the stories all come together perfectly. You feel for the Early and the women that are actually innocent but have been charged with these horrendous crimes. As you witness the hum

Review of Near Death by Glenn Cooper

Alex Weller is a scientist that has an obsession with after death experiences. He finds that in animals and humans there is a natural drug-type substance that is extractable just after they have died. He becomes obsessed and starts getting prostitutes, kills them, and extracts the substances. He finds that the younger the human, the better the "trip". he starts using the substance. He finds a scientist that can replicate the substance and starts giving to his core group. Cyrus is an FBI agent who has a young daughter that is dying from an inoperable brain tumor. He meets Alex, who is a neurologist who happens to be on his daughter's case trying to prevent the seizures that are a side-effect of her tumor. Eventually Cyrus is put on the case of whom is killing the young prostitutes. This book was really good. You really sympathize with Cyrus as he is forced to work on this case while he is trying to be at his daughter's side as much as possible before she dies. It's

Review of Hotter Than Helltown by SM Reine

This is the first book I have read by this author. I was definitely curious especially since it is in a man's point of view. This is the third book in the Preternatural Affairs series. It follows a male witch, Cesar Hawke, as he and his partner have to solve a crime involving mutilated dead bodies that are popping up all over the place. It took me a little while to get to this book, but once I got into it, I didn't put it down until I was done. Cesar is absolutely hilarious. I found him squeamish, unsure of himself, always seems to have a plan, and yet very likable. He is also very loyal to his partner and his director. Towards the end of the book, he is able to find the confidence he needs to pull off some hard magic and save his boss. I look forward to reading more books with him in it.

Review of Once Loved: Shattered Past #2 by Cecy Robson

Image
This is the second book in the Shattered Past trilogy. It is about Lety, the younger sister of Mateo from the first book. She is a college student from an abusive home trying to get away from the abuse, and Brody, the easy going millionaire that she meets and falls in love with. Lety met and fell in love with Brody during their freshman year. Due to the tragedy that is her family, she broke up with him, feeling she wasn't good enough to date him. They run into each other during their third year and Brody is able to convince her to give them another try. While she is determined to make it through school with help from nobody, she learns that Brody's life wasn't nearly as perfect as she thought. As she gets more and more involved with him and his family, she decides to break a serious family tradition and fights back against the abuse of her father. I really liked getting to know Lety in this book after meeting her in the first book. She is very strong-willed and stubborn,

Review of A Curse Unbroken by Cecy Robson

This was the final book for Celia and Aric in the Weird Girls world. While some of it was predictable, I was happy with how it ended. While in the last book, the author had Celia basically separated from everyone else, in this one, she is separated from what makes her a "weird girl". She is, for the most part, totally human as she goes through everything. With the help of a special being, she is able use her brain to eventually defeat this final evil, which also makes her have to deal with her past. I was glad that she and Aric finally got their happy ending. I can't wait for the next saga.

Review of A Cursed Bloodline by Cecy Robson

Image
This is the fourth book in the Weird girls series and I have to say that it was my least favorite. If I hadn't read the fifth one before this, I'm not sure I would've gotten through it. In this book, Celia is the one forced to break Aric's heart, as well as push everyone away from her, as one of the wolf elder's has gone crazy and threatened to kill everyone she loves if she doesn't. Celia and her family go through a lot of devastation in this book before they finally can defeat the bad guy.

Review of Lets Make This Thing Happen by PJ Adams

This is a story about Emily, a successful businesswoman that goes to a small performance by Ray, the lead singer of one of her biggest high school rock band crushes. By a twist of fate, she gets the opportunity to him after the concert where sparks fly. The upside is she is experiencing a dream come true. The reality is that they are both married. Emily is at the point where she is realizing her marriage is over, so she can't resist pursuing a relationship with Ray, who has been separated from his wife for a long time. Obstacles threaten to break them up, but in the end they are able to overcome them. Normally when one (or in this place both) of the main characters are married, it's an instant don't read for me. However, knowing right from the beginning that the marriages were at the end helped me to decide to give it a try. I really liked Emily's character and while some of it was predictable, it worked for me. It was something I could almost imagine happening. With so

Review of The Devil Will Come by Glenn Cooper

Elizabetta is a student of archeology, trying to get more permission to work on a wall in some catacombs in Rome. She's denied permission from the Vatican. Suddenly her boyfriend is gunned to death, also injuring her. Ten years later, Elizabetta has become a nun and a teacher. Her old professor comes to her to once again to work on the same catacombs. At first, she says no but then finds out she is being ordered to. After many twists and turns, Elizabetta's life is put into peril, but for another nun's scream. Her brother, a police officer in the Vatican, feels she's not safe, so she returns to her father's home. As the story goes on, her whole family is pulled into the mystery of the catacombs. The book goes back and forth from around the death of Christ to present time, making it a bit confusing, if not annoying. I felt it would have been much better read if the historical parts had been in a prequel novella. Elizabetta was a

Yet Another Book Review - Spy Games: Paradise Falls, Book 4 by Abigail Graham

Image
Let me start off by saying I don't like to start reading series from anything other than the first story. I decided to go ahead and read anyways since I had agreed and not noticed which book in the serial it is. While there were definitely things I missed by not reading the previous parts, I thought the author did a good job of making sure one wasn't totally lost of they made the same mistake I had. Once I started reading, I was so engrossed in the story, I didn't put it down until it was done. I liked the interactions and budding relationship between Jacob and Jennifer as they help each other get through their personal issues. I will definitely be reading the rest of the serial. The only negative comment I have is that the author has the characters, especially Jacob, smirking all of the time. I found this to be quite annoying.

Twisted Dreams by Marissa Farrar

Beth leaves to go to college to find some independence. Before she even gets to college, there's an incident that involves a live wire. Instead of being rescued, she rescues the person trying to help her. She sees a dark haired male in the distance. She gets to college and instantly clashes with her roommate. She meets a guy named Flynn that appears to be taken with her. Along with being half vampire, she also has premonitions of things to come. She gets invited to go to a carnival and while there she has a premonition of a car flying off the ride. The excitement goes from there, including Flynn and a carnie having an interest in her and her reactions to it all. I found the book to be very interesting and well written. It hit upon a lot of paranormal areas. There were definite surprises in the plot, rather than one that you can figure before it happens.

Inside Broken: Talon & Everly book One by Ana W. Fawkes

Image
When I started reading this book, I wasn't sure what to expect.I'm pretty new to the MC book genre. In this book, the author doesn't try to sugar coat pieces of the MC culture to make it more appealing to those looking for a traditional type of romance novel. Because of that, she includes situations the characters are in that I wouldn't normally read in other types of books. However, the writing was so well done, it still worked for me. Even though the two main characters didn't meet until over halfway through the book, everything about them pulled me, causing me to finish the story quickly. I look forward to reading the next piece of their story.

Obsessed by Terry Towers

This is a story about a hit man named Elijah and an actress he's obsessed with. For years he's followed Sidney from Con to Con just to get her autograph. One word from her and he can't even think straight, let alone talk. One night, fate is smiling on him as he gets to rescue Sidney from a bad situation. From there, the relationship goes full speed. From the beginning, I loved being inside Elijah's head. Hearing how he feels about everything, from his job to Sidney to everything he's been through makes me just want to hug him. While I didn't feel the same about Sidney's character, she was likeable and well written. Once I started reading it, I didn't stop until it was done. The only questionable thing about this is whether or not Elijah keeps his job or finds something legal to do. Definitely 5 stars

Harvest Moon by Helena Shaw

Image
This is a book about Dawn Garrett, a girl on the run from her step-father. She does what she has to do to survive. She comes to a mountain town and is living there, working in a bar. The town starts getting shaken up when a large amount of hikers start coming up missing. Then Dawn's best friend becomes one of the missing. She meets a man who is also not who he portrays himself to be. Sparks fly. While it's a bit predictable, it has a very satisfying ending. The book comes together perfectly from the beginning to the end. Everything is perfectly explained about the main character and why she has changed her identity.  I highly recommend this one. 5 stars

The Navy SEAL's Christmas Review by Cora Seton

Image
This was my first story by this author, so I didn't have any starting expectations. Once I started, though, I didn't stop until it was done. I totally emphasize with Sarah having to compete in a stereotypical job and having to try to prove to herself. I didn't really care for Dan's sexism with this in the beginning, but as the story went on, it appeared to be just an ego thing and not too particularly against women. When they finally hooked up, it was hilarious. I can't wait to read more from this author.

The Whispers Review by Lisa Unger

Image
**I received an ARC of this story for an honest review Overall I did like the story. The beginning was really good, but then the end felt really rushed. There was too much crammed in for a short story. I would have liked it a lot more if it had been a full length novel. I liked the main character, however she seemed to get over such tragedy rather quickly. Her surviving daughter seemed to grieve longer than she did.  3 stars out of 5

Son of No One by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Image
I have been a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon for years and love most of her books. However, this was was kind of disappointing. The relationship between the two main characters felt very rushed and didn't work for me. I did, however, enjoy seeing the past (and hopefully future) characters. The reversal scene was hilarious.
