Review of Strange Magic Pt 1 by Michelle Mankin



Thyme owns an ice cream shop called Chantelle Glace. She has a grandmother that's 62 and a boyfriend named Shane that she's known since she was a kindergartner. Leon Johnson owns The Hotspot, a bar, and wants to buy Thyme's shop because of it's location. When Thyme was heading to her shop, Leon came upon her, held her hand for a moment, and said he wouldn't try to buy her place anymore, that he wanted to be friends. Thyme had a criss-cross pattern on the inside of her wrist. To celebrate Thyme's engagement to Shane, they go to The Hotspot with another couple. Leon wanted to give them a tour of his establishment. Upon meeting his manager, Thyme thought she looked just like Marie Laveau. After they meet her, they both pass out.
I found Thyme to really care about the people in her life. She's very cautious and yet she's a very curious person. She doesn't know anything about her family as her mother abandoned her.
I found this book to be very good reading material. I loved the twists and turns. The only thing I would advise a future reader is to also have book two.

Review of Hotter Than Helltown by SM Reine

This is the first book I have read by this author. I was definitely curious especially since it is in a man's point of view. This is the third book in the Preternatural Affairs series. It follows a male witch, Cesar Hawke, as he and his partner have to solve a crime involving mutilated dead bodies that are popping up all over the place. It took me a little while to get to this book, but once I got into it, I didn't put it down until I was done. Cesar is absolutely hilarious. I found him squeamish, unsure of himself, always seems to have a plan, and yet very likable. He is also very loyal to his partner and his director. Towards the end of the book, he is able to find the confidence he needs to pull off some hard magic and save his boss. I look forward to reading more books with him in it.

Review of Near Death by Glenn Cooper

Alex Weller is a scientist that has an obsession with after death experiences. He finds that in animals and humans there is a natural drug-type substance that is extractable just after they have died. He becomes obsessed and starts getting prostitutes, kills them, and extracts the substances. He finds that the younger the human, the better the "trip". he starts using the substance. He finds a scientist that can replicate the substance and starts giving to his core group. Cyrus is an FBI agent who has a young daughter that is dying from an inoperable brain tumor. He meets Alex, who is a neurologist who happens to be on his daughter's case trying to prevent the seizures that are a side-effect of her tumor. Eventually Cyrus is put on the case of whom is killing the young prostitutes. This book was really good. You really sympathize with Cyrus as he is forced to work on this case while he is trying to be at his daughter's side as much as possible before she dies. It's...
